Hi all,
I found some Tylomelanias in a pet shop today, they didn't have ANY information about them save they're a rarity. They didn't even know the name (well, I was able to help them on this point).
Does anyone keep them, and under what conditions?
I'd say temps around 26, 28 °C, high pH, around 7.5 to 8, and rather hard water.
Can anyone confirm this?
I'd really love to have them, but with the information I got from the pet shop (haha) I'm not going anywhere.
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
I´m not keeping them, but I know they need the same waterparameters as the shrimps from Sulawesi.
Alex Behrendt wrote a nice article about them in the DATZ 3/2008 with all the information you need. |

Hi Heike,
thanks.
I have looked into the Sulawesi shrimp rather intensively (that's where I got the ideas about the water parameters). However, I don't have this high a temperature in any of my tanks (the other values would be more or less ok), so I'd especially like to know if someone keeps them successfully below 26 °C.
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
I have in mind that someone said or wrote somewhere, that his Tylomelania died when the temperature sank too much.
I don´t know if you have allready seen this : http://www.allesumdieschneck.de/html/tylomelania.html
Why not building up a new tank for sulawesi shrimps and snails ? |

Hi Heike,
you read my mind...
The Sulawesis are my next big future shrimp project. But honestly, another tank (I've already got five) would be too much for me at the moment. I'm setting up a business AND I have three kids... I guess I'll just have to wait some more.
So the big decision was between the Sulawesi Cardinals and Black Tigers - and the Tigers won.
Cheers

| Wouldnt they need high ph and soft water not high ph and hard water? People here in the US tend to keep them in soft water... |

Hi,
they have been bred in hard water with an extremely high pH (around 8.5), so that's not really a problem. The water parameters they come from are crucial. I don't recommend putting a shrimp originating from GH 2, KH 1, pH 6.5 into hard water; that one is sure to die of molting or adaption problems.
I'm glad I can keep those tigers in my tap water (GH 15, KH 8, pH 7.5).
They've been living here for around four weeks, and they're molting and happy.
Cheers
