Hi all,

yesterday I had a look at my RCS selective breeding tank and thought I'd flip. Masses of brown hydra - on the glass and on one plant. And this now - my best-colored female has just released her offspring! I'm not sure whether hydra really eats young shrimplets, but I've seen an older shrimp come too close and jump back in panic when it touched the hydra. Something is there...

I run this tank without a filter and always have daphnia in there in order to filter the water biologically. I seem to have had massive bacteria reproduction, and there are many, many young daphnias in there right now. This has, in turn, probably led to those hydras.

Poo. I took the plant out (my water orchid) and drenched it in fizzy water. This took care of those critters. The others I saw were scraped off the glass very carefully in order not to leave a stump, from which they easily re-grow.

So far, I haven't seen any more of them.
Tomorrow a friend will send me some great pond snails (Lymnaea stagnalis), they seem to be predators of hydra.

Cheers
Ulli

Spixi snails will eat them. Good luck!

Spixi snails as in Asolene spixi?
They'll eat about anything, won't they?

The big advantage of Lymnaea stagnalis is that they're native to Germany. They're also plant eaters, but when that gets too much for me I can throw them into my pond in the garden and they will survive.

Cheers

I gave mine away, terrible, wicked snails...but beautiful.Twisted Evil
I found I had lots of hydra when I first set my tanks up. Came in on the plants I guess. I feed so sparingly I think I starved them out. I do not see them anymore, and they were literally on everything.

Hi,

a little update.
The hydra came back with a revenge. Everything was just covered in them.

Then I remembered the vet had given me some Fenbendazole paste for treating our hedgehog and there was something left of it.

So on Monday I dosed 0.2 ml of it into a syringe without a needle and drew water into it, shook it well and squirted it into my 12 litre tank.

A day later the hydra had shrunk, and today they have disappeared. Today I did the usual water change and put some Lymnaea stagnalis in.

Looking good so far.

Cheers
Ulli
