Filter mat 50 x 50 x 2 cm, pore size 'fine'.
beading string, diameter 0.25 mm
upholstery needles (make sewing the cylinder a lot easier)
scissors
fixing pins
pump
elbow tube
measuring tape
ruler - might be quite helpful

By all the rules I should now talk about pi times x, but I'll leave that out since all cuttings calculated according to this formula have proven to be far too small afterwards!
It's better to look for a cylindrical thing that has approximately the interior diameter you want. In my case that was a liqueur bottle with a diameter of 6 cm. Wrap the filter mat around it and leave an overlap of a good 2 cm. Mark the width, designate the rectangle by using a ruler parallelly to the edge and cut. I won't say anything regarding the height, everyone should adjust this to their own tank.
In order for the cylinder to have a real round cross section it is highly important to slant the edges that are to be sewn together for about 2 to 2.5 cm. For this task I drew subsidiary lines and cut the slant with a pair of scissors. Surely this would also work (and maybe better) with a real sharp knife, however, I didn't have any on hand.
It's just important to make the slant as you can see in the picture. |

Fix the overlap and then make two parallel seams with a U-shaped upholstery needle. |

| Cut a circle sized to the cylinder's exterior diameter for the bottom and sew this "lid" on, again with the upholstery needle. The lid makes the cylinder more true to form and stabilizes it. |

| Well, now we just have to stuff our pump into the cylinder, cut the flexible tube to length, attach the elbow tube, cut a little slit into the mat cylinder, fidget the outlet through and put the entire thing into the tank... Do I really have to tell you anything about how to adapt it to your tanks? |
