Hi Robin,
snails only breed in very high numbers if there's enough food. So throwing in less food usually helps keep the snails in check.
Heike, are these Malayan Trumpets (TDS)?
If they are, I have them in all my tanks because they're very beneficial to the soil and use superfluous food that would otherwise spoil the water. I took out one MTS of my hang-on filter. Made one heck of a ruckus as it was caught in the rotating impeller, but the shell wasn't damaged one bit. Tough little critter.
The banana root looks real great. I like it a lot. Really special!
So a normal sponge filter works in salt water, too. Hmmm...
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
really that´s the big "?". First I had some Pachymelania fusca in there with breed, than unfortunately I put by accident 4 of these very small snails in there as well (they are not the common TDS) which only grow up to about 3mm.Now I can only wait if they grow bigger than 3mm to see which snails are Pachymelania breed and which are not.Another point is that the Pachymelania grow so slowly.
Anyway, I bought my shrimps packed in 2 small plastick bags (about 12 x12 cm each). There were 15 shrimps at all. Fortunately only 2 died, the rest now is swimming,swimming,feeding,swimming,......... |

Hi Heike,
yeah, I know those plastic bags and those pleading eyes...
Those were my first shrimp. The guy in the fish store told me they're freshwater shrimp and can very well go into a freshly established tank with Brita-filtered water.
Guess what... Call it a spontaneous act of goodwill going bad.
Then I found Garnelenforum and started to read, read, read. You know the rest .
Interesting snails, have you already asked Alex?
Cheers

| Hi Robin. Because ghost shrimp are used as feeders they suffer from overcrowding and overbreeding. Many times they carry/have diseases. It may be why yours are dieing. |

Thanks Carole - I am understanding that about Ghost shrimp now. I am interested in Red Cherry shrimp, however, Ghost shrimp are the only ones available at my local pet stores. I wanted them shrimp so bad, I have just been buying the Ghost shrimp! I am now considering buying some other species over the internet.
Thanks again

Hi Robin,
if you still want to give the Ghost shrimp a try ask your lokal dealer to inform you as soon as he gets a new load. Maybe you`re lucky the next time. If you have good contact to him he probably can order some other shrimps for you at his wholesale dealer. Buy at least 10 as they feel much more comfortable in a bigger group. Buying via internet doesn´t mean that the shrimps you get won´t die. It allways depends on the posting and packing conditions and many other things that you don´t have any influence on. Give your dealer a try, maybe he´s willing to help a good customer. My lokal dealer does so if it´s possible for him. |

Hi Robin,
nice to hear that you don´t give up. Please keep us informed. I´m curious what shrimp you choose in the end. And of course you welcome with any other question that comes up. |

Robin, I am sure you can find a very affordable deal on cherry shrimp in the swap and shop at The Planted Tank Forum. Good luck! I just took the fish out of my cherry tank and now all the beautiful shrimp came out. And..I discovered my first baby shrimp!!! |
