Hello! I'm not really having a problem with my tank or the Danio fish that are in there but the Ghost shrimp I purchase at my local pet store (for 30 cents each!!!) are not living long at all. I bought 6 last weekend and three have already died!  My Danios are not eating them - when I find the shrimp they are in one piece.
I understand that they are mainly used as "food" for other fish and not always shipped in the best conditions so I am wondering if I should buy them from a breeder off the internet. Would they be of better condition than those purchased at a pet store?

Hi Robin,
I think getting your shrimp from a breeder will be more satisfying in the long run. However, this depends very much on the breeder, of course...
The conditions in which food shrimp are usually bred and shipped are likely to stress them out, so they are very weak and prone to premature death.

 Ulli, I have come to find that I can always count on a response from you!!!! Thank you for that... I have been checking my post all morning waiting for a reply - very happy to see yours I have been in touch with two breeders mainly with questions about Cherry shrimp but one of them sells Ghost shrimp too. I will have to look into it further.
Okay, here is where I sound stupid - I do not know what country your "flag" is from under your name.... Is it Germany??

Hi Robin,
yes it´s Germany. 
But, what I wanted to ask for is the latin name of the Ghost shrimp.
Here in Germany you normaly get marine or brakish shrimps(Palaemo sp.) as foodshrimps. Maybe it´s just the lack of salt that makes them die. I just looke with google and it says Palaemonetes sp for Ghost shrimp,then it would be a sweetwater shrimp. Better to ask for the latin name than the commonly used. |

Hey Heike,
Yep, the Ghost shrimp or Glass shrimp are sold as food only - the girls at the pet store were surprised that I was keeping them as pets! I looked on the site www.liveaquaria.com and these two words were in the description:
**Palaeomonidae (family name)
**Paleomonetes
I am not familiar with these names but maybe they will help you.
I have never added salt to the aquarium water - my Danios do not require it and frankly, I don't want to mess with the salt!!! Do I have to add the salt??? I thought these shrimp were freshwater shrimp. |

Hi Robin,
not so unusual.
I bought 2 packs of food shrimps a week ago.They seem to be Palaemon varians,a brackish shrimp an were sold as food for marine fishes. I love to see them swimm in my brackish tank.Unfortunately there are some sweetwater and brackis tolerant shrimps and some that only tolerate sweetwater. It could probably be a hint for which fish they supposed to be food. If it is for marine fishes try to ut a brackish tank up.Mine has 15g marine salt per liter water (sorry don´t know how many gallons this is) which makes it 15 %o .
Well it say´s freshwater in the description,so my guess was wrong,sorry no other clue. |

thanks Robin, that's what we're here for 
I was first also thinking that maybe you had a brackish-water inhabitant in your tanks, but obviously the live-food shrimp in the US are usually ghost or glass shrimp and thus fresh-water inhabitants.
I had some food shrimp dying on me in fresh water, but those were Palaemon varians.
So my guess would still be too much stress.

| Oh my goodness... I wanted to stay away from salt water!!! Cherry shrimp do not have to have any salt do they??? I don't want the shrimp to suffer but I sure don't want to mess with salt water levels, etc.... |

Hi Robin,
Cherry´s or Red Fire Neocaridina heteropoda need freshwater.
But having a brackis tank is not that much messing around .I set my tank up with 15g salt/l water.Now when I change water I take 10l out and put 10l with 150g salt back in.Thats all.  |

Cherries don't need salt water, and the ghosts don't, either.
EDIT: Heike, you beat me to it...
I really, really would like to have a brackish water tank, but I'm also not sure about the maintenance.

I didn't think there are so many plants that can live in brackish water.
What are those root-like things on the right?
Have you kept the original filter?

| Awesome pictures!!!! How did you get such close up ones of the shrimp?? Mine usually turn out blurry. And those snails - I thought they multiply out of control. Is that true? Are they good to have in a 6 gallon tank? |

it´s a root out off the terra suplies.I persume it´s banana root,well thats what a catalogue said. No,I don´t use the original filter, I use a sponge filter with air-pump. |
