I can get my redclaw crayfish to breed all the time but few babies survive.

They are fed well and have plenty of hiding places, rocks pipes, plants etc

But they always eat each other! I never end up with more than 6 adults.

How can I stop this?

Would it be cruel to separate then into small tuperware containers until they are adult?

Hi,

how small are those containers we're talking about?

If you can, put the baby crays into a separate tank. They do cannibalize each other, but not as badly as the adults.

BTW, I've moved this from Shrimp to Crayfish Breeding.

Cheers

They ARE in their own tank.

The containers are about 15cm ( 6' ) squares. I have about 10 of these but can buy another 10. That would save 20 babies lives. I just dont know if it would be cruel. I'll have to change the water everyday or 2.

Maybe I could wait for the next batch, this way they won't know any better.

Hi,

normaly crays are not very social unless they´re mating, they are more likely to be outsiders,so it wouldn´t be cruel to keep them separate. Their nature is to survive, which means the strongest, healthiest or cleverest stays alive by killing the competitors. So don´t worry about their social feelings, they normaly don´t have any.

Hi,

Heike is right - however, a 6' tupperware container won't last long. They grow too fast and will need much more room pretty soon.

Cheers

I was worried they wouldn't have enough room. How old do they become sexually mature?

Then I can separate them in a male and female tank.

I notice when they become adult they never fight.

Hi,

they are about 5 to 6 cm long (about 2") when they become sexually mature. With crays, you always measure the body length without the claws.

The males have a red dot on their claws when adult.
The females have oval openings (gonopores) at the third walking leg pair onset, the males have thorn-like appendages at the fifth walking leg pair onset (gonopodes).
Here are some pictures (German forum, but the pics are self-explaining and some even have English explanations): http://pfranzek.whv-web.de/wirbellose/thread.php?threadid=1293&threadview=1&hilight=&hil%20ightuser=0&sid=d4fe1545c153291334a9448fd969c2a8

Cheers

help! I found another baby redclaw that was being eaten by another baby last night. I thought it was dead. No Claws or legs and its tail was chewed but then I saw it moving so I quickly took it out. It is about 2cm . Just a stump! Even the feeding arm near its mouth is gone, It has one left. So This morning I held a bit of a pea next to its mouth and it appeared to be chewing it, the only arm near its mouth was gripping at it. What should I do? Its lying in a bowl with just enough water over its body. It can't move.

I'M DEFINATELY SEPERATING THE BABIES INTO LITTLE BOWLS IN FUTURE THIS IS TOO CRUEL.

Yeah, separating them sounds like a good idea after what has happened. Maybe you could use larger containers instead of little bowls?
You'll have to put them in larger containers anyway after a while.

Cheers

Once they are adult I can put them together again or give away some males. I found cheap plasic containers $2 each 5cm x 5cm so I could buy about 20. But I'll hunt around for bigger ones.

How sad to hear that. Poor thing.

Please keep us posted how your container plan works out though.
