Hej,

many breeders over here have stopped crossing Red Bee and Snow White Bee now, as these crossbreeds have some serious shortcomings.
Many people have started to look for "pure" Red Bee that have no Snow White Bee genes in them.

Cheers
Ulli

According to - among others - Friedrich Bitter, Uwe Neumann and an article in Caridina 1/2008 (German-language specialty journal) the white is not as dense in those crosses. You get nice patterns pretty fast, but...

A (rather extreme, I admit) example: http://www.garnelenforum.de/board/attachment.php?attachmentid=4888&d=1203246073
This was posted by Frank from Garnelenforum, the entire article can be found here: http://www.garnelenforum.de/board/showthread.php?t=105108&highlight=snow+white+kreuzung

Frank says he has stopped bringing Snow White Bees into his Red Bee strains and goes the longer and more work-intensive way of selection.
Others do the same.

Cheers
Ulli

Frank told me he'd maybe write something himself and post it here - which would be obviously the best. First-hand information is preferrable.
I'll thus have to ask you for a little more patience.

Anyway, with Frank's permission, for those who haven't been able to open my link above, here's the pic:

And this is what Frank wrote:

The picture you've posted shows the Snow White's influence very well. The yellowish/transparent areas are very clear.

The shrimp shown in the picture below (you have the permission to upload it to the board) has no Snow White ancestors (I got it from Uwe Neumann, Berlin).

You can clearly see that the white parts are of a very dense color!

Conclusion:
Crossing in Snow Whites gets you good results regarding the grades but has a negative effect on the white parts.

Cheers
Frank

wow that is a gross shrimp. I guess its like you get what you pay for....if you work hard great results, if you go for snow with cross breeding then you might get some really nice ones or ones that look like poo...

What a strange outcome.... Perhaps after I have learned more I will also try some cross breeding as well as selective breeding. Getting in a hurry with this hobby can lead to problems down the road. So for now I will watch these results from those with more knowledge.

Thank you for the great information. I think I could learn much about shrimp if I could read German...and to think my family (grandparents) came to America from Germany in the late 1800s when still just children....

Cheers, Bill
