Hi all,

now I'm done with my new vase (yeah, it's bigger than the old one).

Diameter: 19 cm
Height: 60 cm
Volume: 17 litres

Root: Mangrove
Substrate: Crushed glass
Plants: Vallisneria spiralis, Java fern, flame moss (?), Hydrocotyle, Elodea and Hygrophila indica

Inhabitants: some orange ramshorn snails that were sitting in the plants and a Melanoides tuberculata
Future shrimp: Neocaridina heteropoda

First: Choosing the right place.

Second and third: the substrate (thoroughly washed) and the vase with the substrate and some water.

Third: Root and plants have been added. As this thing is so darn high a lot of plants will sit somewhere on the root.

And, finally, the water's been filled in.

Hi Ulli,

Crushed glass? Will it cut? Sound dangerous to me.

Hi,

yeah, they get morning sun until 11 o'clock, and I do have pretty many green algae in there. In the summer I just let down the shades so the water doesn't heat up too much. The maintenance is quite a lot of work (the algae...), but it's just such a pretty look, and the shrimp in there are totally healthy and bigger than anything I've seen in my other tanks. I have one heteropoda that's easily the size of a male Amano.

Emorsso, the crushed glass isn't dangerous. I've tested it by rubbing some between the backs of my hands, and it wasn't even sharp, more like gravel. No bleeding Wink (fortunately).

Thanks, guys!

Cheers
Ulli

And that's how the new vase looks after roughly a month. Time to do some gardening ...

Sorry for the bad quality, I and this camera will never be friends.

This is the vase on the left with the snowball shrimp. This one has been running for about six months.

Very very cool! Have you seen any of the micro mini tanks out there? They look like big tanks until they put their hand next to it and show you it's like the size of a cigarette pack..lol. Laughing Have you been to Aquascaping World yet Ulli? If not you really should check it out. Very nice forum, all about design mostly.
There is a plant I saw the other day that I bet would look swell in that tall cylindrical vase. Let me go see what's it's called..BRB. Wink

Hi Carole,
wow, that's some plant! I've found it under the name of Echinodorus "Vesuvius", so maybe that was just a typo.
This sure would look great *dream*

Cheers
Ulli
