Hi all,
just great. I broke my heteropoda + Black Tiger vase on Saturday. A big chunk of the upper rim broke off when I tried to move it. Aaaargh! Stupid me! Usually I turn it around slowly by holding it way down with both hands and pushing gently, but that time... You may insert all the cuss words you know right here.
Now the formerly 8 liter cylindrical vase is down to 6 litres, and I will have to do something about that pretty soon.
The upside of this is - I get to do a new tank!!!!
I got a rather high vase today, it's got a dia of 19 cm (just like the old one) but is 60 cm high, which gives it a gross volume of 17 liters.
I'm planning on prolonging my hang-on filter's intake pipe so it reaches down near the substrate in order to get some water circulation.
There will be a mangrove root (yes, there were some long slim roots out there, but only in the second pet store), crushed glass as a substrate (of which I have some left from my last project) and maybe Vallisneria spiralis and other plants. I'll bind some moss to the root and might even place some Java fern on top of it.
I'll take over most of the water and muck from the old vase (and the filter, of course) and hope for the best. The Black Tigers, however, will go into their own tank then.
I know most denitrificant bacteria are substrate-dwellers and don't live suspended in the water, that's why I take the muck, too, and some plants also.
Cheers

Hey Ulli,
I am sorry for your broken tank!
Hope the shrimps survived.
Your new plan sounds great!
I am looking forward for the pictures =) |

Hi Nikolas,
yes, no harm done to the shrimp...
I'll start my new tank project tomorrow, the root is still soaking in hot water.
Gives off lots of tea-brown stuff.
Cheers

Yay..new tank..always fun. Aren't mangroves brackish to saltwater? At least they are here in FL. There is a shop that has a nice stand of them growing out of a holding tank for anthias and fairy wrasses.{saltwater}
They are also used in refugiums. Is this a different type? |

Hej Carole,
the pet shop around the corner doesn't have bogwood, which I usually prefer. They also have no idea where their mangrove roots are from - well, they tried to sell Neocaridina heteropoda as Blue Tigers, so I wouldn't believe a word they say anyway
I already have a mangrove root in one of my other tanks, to no ill effect. I water them really well and boil them, so I think any remainders of salt will wash out anyway.
Cheers

| Oh..I see, it's just a root you are using as driftwood...not an actual growing mangrove. They are pretty tough to grow, but when they do they look awesome. There is someone on Reef Central who posted their large cube with a big mangrove growing in the center...it looks neat. |

Hi,
I think a real mangrove would be get too large for the vase... But a challenge. Hmmm - mangrove bonsai perhaps?
Just kidding.
Do you have a link to the mangrove cube?
Thanks

Hi Ulli,
the others are fine, I`ve found the origin of the evil already: filter was streaming too hard and it send the poor thing flying over the thank... regulated it down a bit and now all is well again all my fault,

Hey Jordan,
good for you (and your shrimps)!
Sometimes berried Amano females have a strong urge to migrate to the sea (their larvae needing brackish water) and climb out of the tank, too.
Cheers
