Hi all,

I'd like to know how long the light is on over your tanks, and what your experience is algae-wise.

Cheers
Ulli

I run mine 10, and do have some algae.I have pretty high lighting with no CO2 though. I read something about giving them two 4 hour intervals with a noon break being good to combat algae.

Hi,

I have the light on 12 hours a day, and there are virtually no algae around, only some brown algae in a tank that's currently maturing.

But - I have some very hungry Amano shrimp.

In the windowsill tanks (actually huge vases) there are green algae, but they do get a lot of sunlight.

I use EasyLife EasyCarbo liquid carbohydrates, and I think it makes a great difference regarding plant growth and algae reduction.

Cheers
Ulli

Hi Ulli and All,

I run mine 12 hours as well with no algae problems...I figure the extra light helps produce a healthy bio-film in my tanks for the shrimp to eat.

Cheers, bill

Hey,

my light runs 12 hours a day.

To reduce the growing of algae I bought a special light.
The rest is up to my shrimps and snails Smile

I also run mine for 12 hours, one tank is a community tank with RCS and 4 Amanos (high light, heavily planted tank) and the other is a low light RCS breeding tank.

Hi everyone,

I can only run mine between 6-8 hours, anything longer I will have serious algae problem. Should be related to the substrate I'm using that causes high nitrate in the water.

Cheers,
Emorsso

waterfaller1,
I wouldn't think you would have any problems with increasing you light period if the tank is heavily planted. You could start out by slowly increasing the light by an hour and let it go for a week or so and then go up another hour, this will give you a chance to see if it appears that any bad effects may be coming and make adjustments accordingly.

Thank you, sounds like a plan. I'll let you know how it goes. Cool

Hi John,

wow, that's a lot of light. In this tank (depending on its height) even Hemianthus c. "Cuba" should do well.

Cheers
Ulli
