Yesterday I boiled a dried oak leaf and placed it into my cardinal shrimp tank. Rather worryingly this morning I found one of my shrimps dead next to this leaf. I've had these shrimps for one month now without any deaths, so this seems rather strange.
The water is fine
No ammonia, No nitrite and nitrate is below 10mg/l
It is however rather hard and alkaline GH 12, KH 8 pH 8.1
I was wondering if I should put some carbon into the filter.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Cheers

Hello James,
one is only a warn signal. It could be a problem with the skin ( I don't know the englisch word for "Häutung" sorry )
Was the leaf a green one? or brown leafes? Green leaf isn't so good for the shrimps - it should be brown - only the fallen leaf is right.
And it could be that the leaf has poisonous things on it - Toxic from agrarcultur or car emmisions.
Normally happens nothing with the leaf, but in some cases it could make problems. The boiling isn't a 100% protection.
If it is only one it could be random.
The first act in this case is a 80% Waterchange. This is in 99% a right thing.
Than you can use a water conditioner - but it's only a try.
Watch the shrimps. Are they fit? Normally behaviour? Are they eating? |

Thanks Christian,
I think I'll remove the leaf just in case, and do a water change as suggested.
The other shrimps are acting normally and feeding on a tiny bit of algae wafer. The shrimps have all molted at least once, maybe twice since I've had them so hopefully its just a one off.
Cheers

Hi James and Chris,
the word for "Häutung" is ecdysis or moult. It often happens that shrimps have problems with casting of the skin but oak leaves normally support this process.
However, I would take the leave out of the tank, it really could be contaminated with something if you found it on the ground.
Hope things will go on better.
Best regards, Noa |

Hi everyone,
Better news today.........after doing a 50% water change and removing the oak leaf I have not had any other deaths.
I think to be on the safe side I will do another 50% change today.
Cheers
