| I was just wondering what everyone used for substrate for their shrimp tanks. I have had really good success using ADA aquasoil for my softer water species and was wondering what people used for the species that are tolerate of higher pH and harder water (neocardinas such as yellow, cherrys, snowballs, blue pearls) and any other species that doesn't mind harder water. |

Hello,
first: would you tell us your first name? It is pleasent to call you by your name and your nick is so long
I use for all my species sand. The lowcost sand (glass sand - not the sand specially for children sand pit) from the construktion market. Only 2 - 3 cm.
In some tanks I used small gravel in black, but the sand seems better to me. |

Hi oblongshrimp,
in most of my Neocaridina shrimp tanks I use fine natural gravel with a grain of 2-3 mm up to now, in one I have crushed lava.
My future black tiger tank will feature crushed glass, however.
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
crushed lava sounds good, which grain does it have and where did you get it from.
I also use natural gravel with a grain of 2-3mm in some of my shrimp tanks,in others I use fine "Riverbed Sand" in a lavalike colour and in my crayfish tanks I use natural gravel with a grain up to 5mm. |

Hi oblongshrimp,
I used to use ADA, but find that they disintegrate easily. Now I used a brand called Magic Soil from Japan. It's slightly larger in size and does not disintegrate easily.
I used it on a different species of freshwater shrimps, CRS, Snowball, Blue Tiger, etc.
Cheers! |

Hi Will,
I prefer sand too. Why? ADA and other substrates reduce the ph too much. It stabilize the ph near 6,5. But what happens during the water changing. Top water has almost everywhere a ph near 7,5-8. What happens with the shirmps in tanks? Do they really like this ? My opinion: No. I try to stabilize the tank water by 7,8. |

| I prefert inert small grain gravel that can be vacummed without haveing to worry about sucking sand up! I also like not having to worry about ph swings from waterchanges because in a power outage I have to do constant slightly warmer water changes. |
