Shrimp trap
This was originally posted by Thorsten Schaefer in the German forum. Thanks for allowing us to use it!
Picture 1: First you take a PET bottle, if possible, use one whose form is comparable to the one shown here. Our exemplary bottle has a volume of 1 liter.
If your tank is too small to house such a large bottle, smaller bottles also work but need to be monitored closely so the shrimp trapped in there do not suffocate.
Furthermore you need a scalpel, a sharp knife, a carpet cutter or something else along these lines.
ALL THE EDDING MARKS HAVE ONLY BEEN MADE TO VISUALIZE THINGS. Do not put anything marked with permanent marker into your shrimp tank.
Picture 2: Remove the labels and the cap as well as the little collar the cap left when the bottle was opened.
Picture 3: Cut the bottle at this height. |

Picture 4: The result should look like this.
Picture 5: Now you make a tiny hole (1x2 mm) into the body of the bottle as shown. |

We're done with the crafts part, now we'll proceed to assembling this thing.
Picture 6: Fill in some weight so the bottle will stay on the ground in your tank. A little handful of gravel or one simple stone is sufficient.
Picture 7: Now you put the top of the bottle inside the body, small part forward. Push firmly until the two parts come to a close fit.
Picture 8: 'Arm' your trap with one or two food pellets or some other food your shrimp like and just put in into your aquarium.
Take care that the small hole points upward so remaining air can escape more easily. Furthermore, the animals in the trap won't find it easily this way. |
