Hi everyone,
I would like to keep some Bee or Crystal reds, but my water is rather alkaline. I'm looking for a natural method to reduce this. I was wondering if oak leaves could be used, but am concerned that any build up of tannin would be dangerous to the shrimps.
Does anyone have any experiences to share? |

Hi JKUK,
sorry for the belated answer. Tannin is, in fact, beneficial to shrimps, it helps greatly with the moulting. Plus, they feed on the leaves.
So, you can put those oak leaves in your tank without worry, but don't expect any miracles re your water. They don't lower the pH to a great extent. If you want that you should think about working with peat.
Cheers

Thanks for the reply.
That makes a lot of sense, I always found it hard to believe that shrimps that live in the leaf litter would have a problem with tannin. |
