Well I just ordered 12 of these Pachymelania byronensis snails from a guy in Burgthann Germany of all places!
You don't even want to know what I paid for them.
Here's what they look like. Please note that this is not my picture and was borrowed from Rain at applesnail.net.
Has anyone kept these snails or even heard of these snails before? I have searched the web high and low but have not found much great information yet.
I did find this site but it doesn't have many specifics:
http://perso.infonie.be/pomacea/pachymelania_fusca_uk.htm
From what I have found they come from the west African coast and are native to brackish water. Apparently they will do fine in a freshwater aquarium. From everything I've read and the other two people I talked to, nobody has successfully bred them yet. I would like to know more about their natural habitat in particular so that I can attempt to duplicate it. If anyone knows anything at all about these snails let me know. I am very interested!
I was going to use my new 29 gallon to breed some albino longfin bristlenose but it looks like I may now be converting it into a brackish tank. I guess this would be a good opportunity to buy some nerites to though.
Thanks in advance,
Josh |

Hey Josh,
I think Alex's website might help you out, 'till she her self shows up here
Have a look: The Pachymelania
And since her site is in german, you might also need the following to translate it: free website translator
Hope it helps you... |

Hello Daniel,
I think the price for the snails wouldn't been much higher. But the costs for the shipping to the US - that is the expensive part. |

hai josh, the pic shows me, that are real byronensis, their habitat is the mouth of a river. not brackish or something else. if the saltcontent get over 2%, they will die in 7 days.
If you want more information , about reproduction ans something like that, tell me |

You guys are all the best! Shipping for the snails was $35 which is about 29 Euros. I'm not sure what it actually cost, that's just what I was charged. Thanks Claudine for the link and thank you Alex for the information. You saved me a huge headache! I would have ended up killing my snails. The person I bought them from told me they prefer brackish water! So Alex, from your website I gathered that they are livebearers and unlike MTS have seperate sexes. Very interesting! Do you know what water temperature they need to be kept at? I imagine they prefer a PH between about 7-8.4 like most other snails right? Have you successfully bred these snails? Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks everyone,
Josh |

hai josh,
not much time in the moment, here in germany and austria i knew two persons who have them, and they are still alive.
something very interesting for you, the byronensis host leech. those leech are dangerous for human beeing. the name is BILHARZIOSE.
in some regions in afrika, these leech was found in snails. . please, do not get without gloves into the water, until 3 month are gone.
please look hier:
its all in german, but no time to translate in this short time.

edit: temperature not to warm, think between 24 and 26 grad, that means , mom, 77 fahrenheit |

Wow that's very interesting. I had no idea! Thanks for the link and the heads up Alex. I will be sure to quarantine them when they arrive next week.

Well I guess I don't have to worry about quarantining them....they all arrived dead. The seller says he doesn't have anymore and is pretty hard to get ahold of anyways. What a waste of money! I really wanted some of these guys!
I do have some cool empty shells now though.
Anyone know where I could find some more?
