Plant eating and non-plant eating snails
Snails have a bad reputation. Many people think of snails only as pests and I am here to defend them. Snails make a great addition to most aquariums and are excellent at eating algae, left over food, and dead fish. They are great scavangers and do well with non-aggressive fish. Some snails do however eat live plants so be sure to check here before adding snails to that beautiful planted aquarium of yours!
Plant Eating Snails:
Pomacea Canaliculata (cana)
Marisa Cornuarietis (marisa, giant columbian ramshorn)
Pomacea Maculata
Pomacea Paludosa
Non Plant Eating Snails:
Pomacea Bridgesii (brig, mystery snail)
Asolene Spixi (spixi)
Planorbis Corneus (common ramshorn, european ramshorn)
Melanoides Tuberculata (MTS, malaysian trumpet snail)
Viviparus Malleatus (japanese trapdoor snail, periwinkle)
Neritidae family (nerites)
The names in parenthesis are common names for the snails. Honestly who can remember some of those scientific names? Some of the non-plant eating snails will nibble on softer plants if not properly fed, but for the most part will not harm the plants. Just because snails are listed on the plant eating list does not make them "pests". Canas and Marisas can make great additions to non-planted aquariums. Canas can even grow to the size of a baseball or larger!
You will not be sorry for adding a few snails to your aquarium! |

| Feel free to add to the list if I left any types of snails out. I put down all the common types I could think of but I know there are more out there! |

Hi James,
first you need idividuals of both sexes ,they´re livebearing.I´ve allready seen small snails of this species that appeared suddenly in my tank or I just didn´t recognize them before. When I saw them they were about 5mm big.Unfortunately they disappear and all you might find is an empty shell the same size.I allways wonder if they might not find the appropriate food.

Hi James,
definite all snails without an Operculum which are smaller up to slightly bigger. They are even able to eat species with an Operculum if they are not quick or fit enough to close this in time. And they eat nothing else except foodtabs wich are very rich on animal Protein, but this is just if they have to because they don´t get enough live food.
Greetings Heike
If your german is good enough, this might be a page of interest to you,or just use a translation programme. If you do so be aware of funny translations that not allways do make sense. It somtimes is a bit of guessing an reading between the lines. At least this happens to me when I use a translation programme from english to german.
