Yesterday I recieved a free pair of Cambarellus patzcuarensis they are about 1/2". Will I be able to keep these crays in one of my snail tanks? Will they bug the snails at all or eat any underwater snail eggs?

They are currently living in 2 small containers until I find a permanent home for them.

I don't have time to put them in the tank and watch them yet as I am off to work.

Thanks,
Josh

Hi!

I think that depends on the sice of the tank and the snails we are talking about!

I guess it could work out with apple snails or simular, but not with smaller snail, although I wouldn't realy try!

there seam to be severyl "typs" of these cryfish, one more agressiv than the other! even if they don't go after the adult snails, they might enjoy some eggs "sunny side up" fore breakfast!

Thanks Steffi, I guess I will need to figure out somewhere else to put them. I'm really unfamiliar with the keeping of crays. What are the water requirements for them? What do you guys think about keeping them in my Pleco tank? It's going to be a breeding tank for albino longfin bn's, but not for a while as they are still small. I'm sure I will have to move them once they start breeding because I imagine they may try to eat the eggs. It's a 29 gallon with 11 juvie bn's and a 5" common pleco. The tank has tons of java moss in it as well.

Thanks,
Josh

Hi!

I never hade them myself, but as fare as I know they prefere hard water and a temperature around 25°C / 77F;

to the plecos, are we talking about these fish:

if yes, I don't think they are the proper "neighbours"; to my knwoledge it is best to keep them with other fish, wich are mainly ocupying the upper regions of the tank; also they shouldn't be too small, so that they don't end as food!

Cambarellus patzcuarensis is mostly a peacful crayfish. A community tank isnt the best way to keep them, but if you like cray babies a tank just for the crays would be better.

I kept them with a lot of snails like Clithon sp., Vittina coromandeliana, Vittina semiconica. No problems at all. Very, very little snails they sometimes try to eat. But I never saw them having success.
