Hi all (especially Carole),
I promised to show some of my trees; I wouldn't call them bonsai yet, more like potensai. They are all fresh out of winter storage and thus don't have many leaves yet.
Some are on the way, some are still not much more than a stick in a pot and some are still in the ground trying to grow a trunk (I'll spare you those).
First, this is a Ligustrum sinensis I saved from a local supermarket last year. Some of the main branches have died off, but this is not really a problem with this species, they're fast growers. Those people seem to have never heard that a plant needs to be watered from time to time. I got it at a hefty rebate.
Look at that trunk, this one has really got potential! |

| Then, second, an crabapple I once won at a raffle. Unfortunately some kid stepped on it when it was in the ground, so this one is growing a new apex right now. That's why I'm letting the upper twig grow out so long. |

| Then a Zelcova serrata I saved from the same supermarket last year, too. I love the deadwood on the trunk, the twigs are coming along nicely, although it's in bad need of a haircut. I'll have to do something about that snaking root, though. When I'll repot next time I'll have a look into that. |

And, last but not least, a Syzygium paniculatum I once bought as a bonsai tree (at a hefty discount, as it was infested with aphids) - I decided that I like it better as a potted plant for the time being. But no one can guarantee for what will happen once the trunk has fattened up

Awesome Ulli!!  Thanks so much for sharing your photos. I love them all,especially the first one. I want to have a tree like these. They are so expensive at shops here. I have bought a couple from e-bay, but not had much luck.My one little bonsai between the tanks is still doing well. I feed it tank water every morning with a syringe. I have found my rose bush loves tank water too. It is so hot here, I have to find something that can tolerate the heat. I have two very nice jade plants. I have an awesome book that a friend gave me on Bonsai, with pics and techniques.
I think from what I have seen, you have a very nice home. Lots of sunlight! How are your vase-nanos doing? |

looks like you'll have to start shopping over here, eh? The trees were about ten dollars each (at the current exchange rate), but I did haggle. I had also bad luck with trees from the internet, it's always better if you can see what you'll get. Mostly you'll fare better if you just buy the raw material and build the tree practically from scratch. Plus, this is more fun than just maintaining an older tree.
Have you had a look at the IBC site? Their administrator, Jim Lewis, is also a Floridian, maybe you can ask him for suggestions.
The nano vases are fine, I have to close the shutters in the morning so the shrimp won't get stewed, but this also seems to help against the green algae.

What is IBC? That is cool about the vases. Maybe it's time for some new pics..hint hint.. 
Wow..only $10. huh..that is great. I will bet you pay alot less than I did for blue tiger shrimp too...  |
