Hi All,
Noticed this odd bump on one of my Cardinal Shrimp from Sulawesi this morning... Glad these shrimp are in their own tank and have not been mixed with other species if this is a parasite of some sort. It is very hard to keep track of this shrimp as there are many in the tank, but I will be keeping an eye on it. Perhaps an injury...hard to tell. It looks allot like a pimple I guess would be the best way I could describe it to you.
Your thoughts....?
I am not sure even if I want to leave this one in the main tank.... Could it be we are importing something else with these shrimp?????
Cheers, Bill |

Hi Bill,
is this really a bump, higher than the rest?
Strange thing, I've never seen anything like it. Could be an external infection with bacteria, though.
Or can you see something moving in there? Then it might be a parasite, although I somehow don't believe that.
Of course wild-caught shrimp can carry all kinds of parasites, this is why none will enter my tanks (although the temptation is huge with the Cardinals).
In your place I'd quarantine this shrimp, do a major water change to reduce the bacteria load and maybe add some almond leaves, alder cones or a cinnamon stick to your main tank as well as the quarantine basin. They all have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities.
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
It is indeed a bump like a pimple and resembles an injury of some sort rather than a parasite. Can't seem to locate this shrimp for a look today yet. There are so many in the tank finding it is very hard to do.

Hi Bill,
maybe it's an injury that got infected.
This might heal with the next molt.
Cheers

Hi bettapassion, (a real name would be very nice)
unfortunately we still donīt know what we are dealing with here so I donīt know if salt will be of any help.
The picture is not good enough to make a helpful guess or a diagnosis and there is not really that much we know about medication for shrimp diseases.
Iīve given this link before : http://www.garnelenkrankheiten.de/ in another thread
Itīs probably easier for you, as you see your shrimp in real, to compare it with the pictures of the diseases and parasites.
Best methods to prevent shrimp diseases are a good water quality with regular waterchanges and avoiding overpopulation.
I allways separate shrimps that seem to be ill and could possibly infect the others by puting them into one of these spawn-boxes inside the tank.
If one of the shrimps dies take it out immediately as some diseases spread by cannibalism.
Sorry that I canīt be more helpfull to you. |
