Some information regarding Grit's crabs:
Halloween crab, Gecarcinus quadratus
- only rarely to be found in shops
- the preferrable substrate is bark mulch
- spray with water regularly
- needs enough hiding-places
- water and air temperature should be 20 – 28°C (68 – 82 °F)
- feed two to three times per week, only small amounts
- they like:
- practically all vegetables and fruit,
- brown leaves
- fish food like small crustaceans, small mussels, mosquito larvae, bloodworms and ant eggs, freeze-dried; I let those soak in water a little.
- fish sticks with calcium, fish flakes with herbs, shrimp and fish, small fish sticks with vegetables, grains, algae, yeasts, crustaceans and minerals
- they can reach a carapace diameter of up to 10 cm (3.9")
- breeding in captivity doesn't seem to be possible
Rainbow crab, Cardisoma armatum
- needs caves and opportunities for climbing
- very large water part
- fine sand substrate
- water and air temperature should be 20 – 28°C (68 – 82 °F)
- feed two to three times per week, only small amounts
- they like:
- practically all vegetables and fruit,
- brown leaves
- fish food like small crustaceans, small mussels, mosquito larvae, bloodworms and ant eggs, freeze-dried; I let those soak in water a little.
- fish sticks with calcium, fish flakes with herbs, shrimp and fish, small fish sticks with vegetables, grains, algae, yeasts, crustaceans and minerals
- they can reach a carapace diameter of up to 12 cm (4.7")
- breeding in captivity doesn't seem to be possible, as the larvae probably go through a planctonic development stage in the sea
- aggressive loners
Spider Crab XXL, Neosarmatium meinerti
- needs caves and opportunities for climbing
- very large water part
- fine to medium coarse sand substrate
- water and air temperature should be 24 – 28°C (75 – 82 °F)
- feed two to three times per week, only small amounts
- they like:
- practically all vegetables and fruit,
- brown leaves
- fish food like small crustaceans, small mussels, mosquito larvae, bloodworms and ant eggs, freeze-dried; I let those soak in water a little.
- fish sticks with calcium, fish flakes with herbs, shrimp and fish, small fish sticks with vegetables, grains, algae, yeasts, crustaceans and minerals
- they can reach a carapace diameter of up to 4 cm (1.5")
- they need salt water for breeding
White crab, Metasesarma obesum
- needs caves and stones
- requires a water part, brackish water (if they had been kept in fresh water before, an additional fresh water part is needed)
- fine sand substrat, leaves. The crabs hide between stones.
- water and air temperature should be 24 – 28°C (75 – 82 °F)
- feed two to three times per week, only small amounts
- they like:
- practically all vegetables and fruit,
- brown leaves
- fish food like small crustaceans, small mussels, mosquito larvae, bloodworms and ant eggs, freeze-dried; I let those soak in water a little.
- fish sticks with calcium, fish flakes with herbs, shrimp and fish, small fish sticks with vegetables, grains, algae, yeasts, crustaceans and minerals
- they can reach a carapace diameter of up to 4 cm (1.5")
- they need salt water for breeding
Vampire crab, Geosesarma sp.
- can also be found on trees in the habitat
- shallow water basin, rather high humidity
- mist with water once or twice a day
- substrate should be sandy forest soil, bark mulch
- plants and roots provide opportunities for climbing
- water and air temperature should be 24 – 28°C (75 – 82 °F)
- feed two to three times per week, only small amounts
- they like:
- practically all vegetables and fruit,
- brown leaves
- fish food like small crustaceans, small mussels, mosquito larvae, bloodworms and ant eggs, freeze-dried; I let those soak in water a little.
- fish sticks with calcium, fish flakes with herbs, shrimp and fish, small fish sticks with vegetables, grains, algae, yeasts, crustaceans and minerals
- they can reach a carapace diameter of up to 2.5 cm (1")
- territorial disputes with non-specific crabs
