Has anyone seen these before?
I don't know what species they are, but they grow larger than most.
Judging from the size of the eggs they should be easy to breed.
Male approx 25mm
Female approx 37mm
Cheers

Hi James,
Are these shrimps wild caught? If not for the white stripe and patches all over the body, I would have pass it as Green Neon Shrimp.
Are they from India?
Cheers!

Hi Emorsso,
Yes these are wild caught shrimps, but sadly I have no info as to where they came from.
Is the green neon shrimp what I would know as a C. babaulti form?
Cheers

Hi James,
by looking at the second picture I would say it´s more likely to be a Neocaridina sp., probably heteropoda ,which is very variable in color or N. palmata |

Hi James,
I'll back Heike here - the second pic really looks like a Neocaridina of some sort. However, only a microscopic examination can really tell which species they belong to, I think. Or maybe a real good macro of the rostrum to begin with...
Interesting color, though.
Cheers

A quick update,
The good news is that I'm now starting to find quite a few babies that have survived despite having Rasbora maculata in the tank. |

Way to go, James!
These are good news.
Can the reproduction rates be compared to Neocaridina sp.?
Have the offspring already started to show some color?
What are your water parameters?
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
I'm not sure they are as prolific as say a cherry shrimp, but there do seem to be 20-30 eggs at one time. As to how many have survived the rasbora, I've only actually seen 3 or 4 so far. They don't seem to venture out until they are 6-7mm long.
As to colour they are still largely clear so far.....maybe a hint of green.
Water is
Ammonia.....0
No2 .........0
No3.........less than 10 mg/l
GH............12-14
KH........8
pH.........8.2
Cheers

Hej James,
thanks!
I know that from my cherrys. They hide until they can't be eaten (which is a good thing).
Keep us posted, this is very interesting!
(And please, please don't sell all of them, they're too nice...)
Have you already got news if they're really Neocaridina?
As to the size: some of my heteropoda females are nearly 4 cm long.
Cheers

Another question:
Do they change their color, maybe depending on the mood, or are they universally green?
Cheers

Hi Ulli,
The babies are now colouring up. So far all the males are turning green.
There are also a lot more babies than I first thought.........maybe 20-30.
Cheers

Hi James,
nice to hear from you!
Wait a moment, did you say the males turned green? What about the females?
Their reproduction rate implies they're a Neocaridina sp., or what do you think?
Are you planning on breeding them on?
For these critters I'd even set up a new tank, I like them a lot...
Cheers

The babies all start out clear, but once they reach 7-10 mm they gradually turn more and more green. Females seem to colour up later than males and are always less vivid, but can be quite dark.
I've now lost the pictured female........probably just old age. So will have to wait until the babies start producing their own offspring.
Yes I think they are most likely Neocaridina.
As these seem to be a good hardy shrimp I'm going to set up a breeding colony. |
