These instructions for varnishing an aquarium cover were originally published by Ulf Weiland on the German board: http://www.garnelenforum.de/board/showthread.php?t=107291
Thanks for letting us use them, Ulf!

1. Choose a place where nothing can be damaged by the paint mist. It should be well-aerated as the vapors are not really healthy.
2. Cover everything you don't want the color to stick to - or mask with tape.
3. The workpiece should be de-greased and the surface slighty roughened.
4. Fill possible unevenness.
5. Sand your filler roughly before you start with fine sanding paper, it might be best to spray some control varnish on (mostly used: matte black).
6. If you find some more roughness hone with fine sandpaper so you get a real nice and smooth surface.
7. Clean again, most suitably with silicone remover.
8. Now it's the time to apply the intermediate basecoat. This can be obtained in several basic tints depending on which color you want to use.
9. This coat has to be polished with very fine honing mesh or emery paper with a p800 grain or finer.
10. Again, dust and de-grease. Better work diligently now than fretting later on.
11. Now it's the time to apply the varnish. Choose one that's slightly flexible, as e.g. the laquer used on plastic car parts. Don't just apply one thick coating (as much as your spray can gives off), but work in thin cross layers. You don't want tears or runs to appear. It's recommendable to let the varnish surface dry a little in between. And don't forget to press the spray button of your can _before_ you aim at the workpiece. If you don't, you will end up with thick varnish drippings on your masterpiece.
12. Let it dry. Rather longer than necessary - better that than having fingerprints on it.
13. Depending on your taste and the varnish you might want to apply a final coat of clear varnish.
14. Done.

It's highly recommendable to inform yourselves beforehand if the varnish, the basecoat and the filler go togeher with each other and your aquarium cover.
