So everything I've read says that Amano Shrimp are very hard to breed in an aquarium. Is this true? Has anyone successfully done it? I've thought about getting some and breeding them but have not found good information about breeding them yet. Any input?

Hello Josh,

that's right. The larva of the amano shrimp needs brackish water.
So the breeding is very difficulty, but also possible.
A teammember from crustaforum has it done successful - CarstenLogemann.
He discribed it on his german page http://www.caridinajaponica.de.

Unfortunately the site isn't translated to english yet. But perhaps Carsten can explain it later. I will ask him to do that.

There's a really nice description of breeding Amanos, in English, here: http://mikes-machine.mine.nu/breeding_yamato.htm (great photos and descriptions).

Hi,

a friend of mine breeds Amanos frequently and successfully (she gets +/- 500 shrimplets from every female). She uses 54 litre tanks for upbringing. When the larvae have turned into tiny shrimps she just takes them out and puts them in freshwater. All of them survive. No gradual acclimatization here.

Cheers
Ulli

Hi,

I bred them also with help of the description from Carsten (thanks to the Logemanns Wink) but until I get them grown up "only" 70 survived. It was much for me but I made a few mistakes and never tried again. Maybe there will be time in a few years to do so again.

The larvae eat mostly algae and I used some products for breeding (and feeding) brine shrimp like "liquid cell".

Regards, Noa
