PostPosted: Mon Dec 17, 2007 8:26 pm  Post subject:  Blue Planorbarius corneus? Reply with quoteBottom of PageBack to top

Hi everyone,

This is my first post.

I'm interested if anyone has any information regarding the correct species name for the blue ramshorn. I've noticed that they are often refered to as Planorbarius corneus. However I believe they are more likely to be Planorbella duryi .

As Planorbarius corneus easily grows to 30mm and Planorbella duryi only 15mm it should be relatively easy to rule out the latter.

How large do the blue ramshorns grow?

Any ideas?

Hi,

the blue ramshorn is a normally ramshorn ( corneus ), only in blue.
They will reach a size of 25mm.

Hi JK,

the spotted ones are immature. When they grow older the spots disappear.

Cheers

Yes my brown spotted ones are now rather plain. I don't think they are corneus though.

Hi JK,

as you probably know, all Planorbarius sp. mix freely. After decades of aquaium life, that makes it rather hard to identify the exact subspecies.

I refer to mine simply as Planorbarius sp. to be on the safe side. They aren't corneus (too small), though.

P. corneus gets rather big, so you just have to wait and see...

Cheers

Thanks Ulli,

I only have the brown spotted ones, which as you say are too small to be corneus.

Are the plain and spotted blue ones also too small to be corneus?

Cheers

Hi James,

mine, yes. As are the pink and the red ones, and even the brown ones. After reading up a little on them I don't think they're Planorbarius at all, I'd rather say they're Planorbella sp.

Cheers
Ulli
