Hi all,
on the German board Nina has started a project: the compilation of a database about USOs (Unknown Swimming Objects) and other bugs in the aquarium, and I thought we might participate as we will get the data for our Knowledge Base.
So, if you have own good pictures of worms, larvae, bugs or other uninvited guests in your tanks you'd like to make available to Garnelenforum and Crustaforum in perpetuity please send them to me (I'll give you my Email addy by PM) and I will pass them on to Nina. She also asks your permission to use the pics on her homepage. Please don't send ...

Shrimpkeeping 101 - The Basics of Shrimpkeeping
Choosing the right aquarium
- Don't start with excessively small aquariums, it's more difficult to maintain the biological equilibrium in tanks that only hold 10 to 15 l.
- Aquarium complete sets of 60 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm are often a good deal and contain all the equipment you need.
- The filter should be made shrimp-safe; shrimplets can easily get sucked in and killed when the slots of the intake tube or the interior filter are too wide. Keep in mind that very ...

Procambarus clarkii
The american red pond-crayfish, also known as Lousiana-River-Crayfish is probably the most commonly kept crayfish in the fresh water aquaristic. Many different color breedings exist already and besides its nature appearance, colors like blue, orange and white are possible.
The crayfish is undemanding concerning the water parameters, pretty active and easy to breed. Its fully grown size will be approximately 15cm, whereas the males turn out to be bigger than the females and are equiped with even more remarkable claws.
It ...

Reproduction of fresh water shrimps
The reproduction of the fresh water shrimp starts with the so called "ovum stain" which is produced by female shrimps. It's the ovaries in which the eggs are produced and depending on color as well as the type of shrimp it is recognizable as a dark, yellow, green, or other discoloration in the neck (carapax/abdomen). As soon as the eggs are sufficiently developed (after about 4 weeks), the female shrimp will shed its skin and at the same time surrenders pheromones to the water.
Attracted by the pheromone ...

Pilsbryoconcha exilis
Synonyms: tropical shell, Thai aquaria shell
The Pilsbryoconcha exilis isn’t very attractively colored. Nevertheless it gets more popular to aquarists who prefer keeping unusual pets. That’s probably because this shell is found more often in pet stores than other species. But that ain’t all to it.
Compared to the endemic pond shell it stands permanent higher temperatures. In the long run 25°C ain’t no problem. Some keepers report that even slightly higher temperatures up to 28°C as well as lower temperatures down to ...

Recipe for spirulina-sticks
- small can of green peas
- spirulina
- freeze dried gammarus
- 60ml disposable syringe (available at pharmacys)

Strain the peas, so they will be seperated from their peel. Shred the freeze dried gammarus as fine as possible. Then mix up the mash with spirulina (about one third) and add about 20% of the squelched gammarus.
You will end up with a firm bluish green pulp. Fill it into the syringe and form tiny, up to 1,5cm long sticks down on a washable pad. Now dry for a day until the stic ...

Plant eating and non-plant eating snails
Snails have a bad reputation. Many people think of snails only as pests and I am here to defend them. Snails make a great addition to most aquariums and are excellent at eating algae, left over food, and dead fish. They are great scavangers and do well with non-aggressive fish. Some snails do however eat live plants so be sure to check here before adding snails to that beautiful planted aquarium of yours!
Plant Eating Snails:
Pomacea Canaliculata (cana)
