Hi all,
I just wondered whether we could start a little thread with recommendable fish to socialize with highly reproductive shrimp like red cherry or snowball.
I, for starters, have the celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus, formerly Celestichthys margaritatus) and Endler's guppies in the red cherry + Amano shrimp tank.
Works well. A few small shrimplets might get eaten, but generally they hide so well in the moss that their numbers continue to grow.
Which fish do you keep? What species can you recommend?
Cheers

Hey,
right now there are only shrimps in my tank - red fire.
But I am thinking about get one or two fighting fish and socialize them.
Yes, I know that they sometimes hunt the shrimps, but I will try =)
Greets,

I keep Otocinclus and Theodoxus fluviatilis snails as window cleaners in with my shrimps.
The only fish I've tried are dwarf rasbora maculata........I'm just waiting to see if any baby cherry shrimps survive in with them. Time will tell.

Hi Nikolas,
forget about the Bettas - I had a breeding pair of Betta imbellis (which are even smaller than the Siamese ones) in a tank with three test shrimps. The smaller one got eaten right away (I wasn't aware that the Bettas' mouths can get soooo large), the second died of stress and the third was hiding so well I only guessed on its presence due to the exuviae in the tank.
Not so great. The Bettas liked it, however, they were spawning like crazy when they ate the shrimp.
Cheers

Hi James,
I have tried Rasbora with shrimps, confirmed they will eat the baby shrimps. I saw it with my own eyes. Even SAE will eat baby shrimps.
The only fish I trust is Otocinclus (so far).

Thats a shame Emorsso, my cherry shrimps have just released two batches in the rasbora tank. Sounds like I'll be lucky to see them again.

Hi James,
this depends a lot on how densely your tank is planted.
In my community tank there are big tufts of moss, and the cherries in there reproduce beautifully even though the Pearl Danios and Endler's guppies love a good snack.
The shrimps only come out when they're big enough not to be eaten, the small ones hide perfectly.
I wouldn't try this with less reproductive species, though.
Cheers

Hi,
I keep Corydoras habrosus,C. pygmaeus,Parotocinclus sp. and Ancistrus with my shrimps. I kept Boraras urophthalmoides in one tank a while ago.I can´t say for sure that they ate the baby shrimps but I surely saw more of them when the Boraras had left the tank. |

Hi James,
this is the tank in question - note all the fish are in the front because they think there might be food .
You may also notice the Cryptocoryne at the left - works very nicely, no problems.
Cheers

Hi everyone,
Heike, do you have problems with the c. habrosus or pygmae with the shrimps, did they ever eat some smaller ones? And do you have experience with breeding the corydoras?
I have c. habrosus and pygmae in a tank without shrimps at the moment, for breeding the fish
In my shrimp tanks I have h. formosa and I have a killi tank with some shrimps but I don't think that they really breed well with killis.
Best regards,
Noa |

Hi Noa,
I once saw some Cory eggs on the frontglas of the tank and they surely hatched but I nerver saw the babys. They are very peaceful and do very well with the shrimps. But I didn´t do anything special to breed the Corys, maybe I´ll try it the next time taking the eggs out. When I do have time a take some new pictures of the tank and post them here. |

Hi Heike,
so don't you think that the corys eat the baby shrimps? I know they are very peacefull, but if you have 10 corys in the tank and every fish eat only 1 baby shrimp per week than there wouldn't be much shrimps left in some tanks of mine... I only ask because sometimes people tell that the corys eat "sometimes" but only one baby shrimp...
What do you think? Can I keep them with blue tigers? I wouldn't want them eaten... Or is otocinclus better to keep with shrimps that breed not so fast?
Best regards, Noa |

Hi Noa,
Inever saw them eat or chase babyshrims. On the other hand my babyshrims can hide in mosses and plants. But if you are not sure and you want to be on the safe side because your shrimps are low breeders, than take Otocinclus or Parotocinclus which don´t grow bigger than 4-5cm,they are absolutely harmless and feed on algae. |
