    Default Singapore Flower Shrimp...

    Hi, I'm a new member...
I'm interested in adding Singapore Flower Shrimp to my FW tank, which will be a 50 gallon. I've read mixed info, either that they're brackish, or they need brackish water in their planktonic stages. Which is true? May I put the adults in a full FW, or do they need some salt? Thanks!

    Welcome to the site.
No these shrimp don't need salt as adults, they are a freshwater species as adults. The larvae do need salt to develop, they get washed down stream to the sea in the wild.
    Welcome again

Welcome to the site! As Peter said, adults are fine in FW, its only if you want to raise the young, then the brackish comes into effect.

Thanks alot everybody, they'll soon be gracing my tank. Btw, I hear they like to hang around the outflow of an air pump or UG filter. I don't want to use an under-gravel, but is there a special filter that they'd find easily accessible to fan food for?

    Hi,

    and welcome from me, too.
I have my flower shrimp in a tank with a filter and two extra pumps providing the shrimp with a good current. For this purpose I use the smallest Eheim motor pump with a filter mat cover (it sucked my snails right out of their shells).

    Cheers

I put a bit of wood directly in the flow from the canister filter and they hang out there. Its better that the current is strong enough so that they just have to hold out their fans and not move them about to get food.

Thanks, I'll note all these things. How big would a breeding setup (if viable) for these shrimp need to be? Like 20 gallons?

The bigger, the better, I'd say. I tried to raise the larvae in a large tank (80 cm) in relatively shallow water to provide better oxygen saturation. Around 50 liters, I'd say.

The only one who has already succeeded in breeding these shrimp had them in 20 liters.

We had a thread here about breeding these shrimp, so maybe you'll find answers to some of your questions there: http://crustaforum.dedenet.de/board/...ead.php?t=1143
