Default Sid the Sloth shrimp - Desmocaris trispinosa

    Hi everybody,

yesterday at the trade fair in Friedrichshafen, South Germany, I found some Desmocaris trispinosa (Guinean swamp shrimp) - finally! I had been looking for these guys for a long time .

Up to now, D. trispinosa is the only species described for this genus. They live in soft to hard water, belong to the specialized type (which means their eggs are large and they do not have a larval stage) and like a larger tank.
I believe Heike also has them.

They can fold their pleopods (swimming feet) sideways and are thus very good swimmers. They can even hover in the water or swim backwards.

Food: omnivores, maybe a tad on the carnivore side.

They are tropical and thus need warmer water, 22 to 27 °C. I have them at 25 °C currently, which they seem to like.

For some pictures (you know I can't photograph ) please see: http://water-box.de/wb/index.php?opt...=86&Itemid=167

Especially the first one explains why my kids have almost immediately named them Sid the Sloth (from the Ice Age trilogy) shrimp...

    Cheers
    Ulli

You might have to take pics after all, since I am excited to see what these guys look like and the link does not work for me Ulli.

    But congrats!

They are lovely, the links are working for me. The swimming sounds cool. They come from New Guinea or African Guinea? I can see why they children call them Sid the Sloth, sid shrimp sounds like a nice common name! Hope the breed for you, thanks for showing us a new shrimp species.
    Cheers

Thanks for your comments, I'm glad the link's working...
They're endemic in Central and West Africa.

Today five of them were hovering in the tank, staring at me. Very strange feeling, now I know how zoo animals perceive us .

Hi Ulli - cool shrimp! They look similar to ones we have here (mostly for food) called Ghost shrimp. Love the swimming abilities!
